Sweet Surrender

Billy picked the brightest of the broken crayons, settled down, and whirled 'em 'round
'Til he had a rainbow like a rubber ball, he gave a grin and stretched up tall
Pointing at the sky, he said, "I like rainbows, I like butterflies."
Jenny jumped a rope to a hundred and two. Broke every record in the local schools.
She could double-dutch it like a superstar. Kids would stop and stare all over the yard.
And when that bell would ring, if Jenny was jumpin' they'd let her do her thing
What I'd give for sweet surrender, and a smile to meet the sun.
Say goodbye to the pretender, fear defender.
Realize his time is passed, his job is done.
No more waiting to begin, I've begun.
Sittin' on a Sunday in a thinking pose, with a runny nose and last night's clothes
Couldn't get to sleep until the early morn, aching, tired, feeling scorned
I know these blues will pass; but the good times seem to go by twice as fast.
So I think I'm gonna call up one a' my good friends, get outside 'fore the walls cave in
Say "Hey buddy! What'dya know? An hour or two, we'll grab some joe?"
We'll sit and talk awhile, find our favorite station on the dial
What I'd give for sweet surrender, and a smile to meet the sun.
Say goodbye to the pretender, fear defender.
Realize his time is passed, his job is done.
No more waiting to begin, I've begun.
Starin' through the summer at the blades of grass, in a backyard jungle with a looking glass
Little critters crawling to and 'fro, wonderin' where she's been, where she'll go
I'll be just like you. Whatever falls in front of me I'll just push on through.
And I'll have my sweet surrender, and a smile to meet the sun
Say goodbye to the pretender, fear defender.
Realize his time is passed, his job is done
No more waiting to begin, I've begun.
