Never
Again

Kid was throwin’ popcorn.
Hit his head like rain
As he sat there sleepin’...
waitin’ for a plane
She was flippin’ pages, in her diary
Only half way sleepin’... caught up in a dream
He was leavin’, lookin’ for some answers and a better look inside
She was tired of fakin’ it and takin’ a back seat in the ride...
swallowing her pride
“Never again” When they finally boarded.
Found their seats inside
She was window four... He was aisle five
Thought the plane was leavin’
when the pilot said “we’re the last in line with three more planes ahead”
They were both so ready just to walk away and leave their life alone
Tired of the faces and the places that they had long called home
He was goin’ crazy, busy tryin’ to prove what can't be
proved
Swore she’d never listen to another who preached a perfect truth
She left that in her youth
Somewhere deep inside she felt a bitter wall crack
She said “hello” and looked away, holding any feeling back
Somewhere deep inside he wished he easily cried
He said “hello” and looked away, and then he wondered why
When the stewardess caught his eye
“Care for a drink?” Said her folks were hippies.
Now her mom wears suits
Watched ‘em buy a dream and put away the truth
With his expectations... underlying fears
Climb the highest mountain, then decide he’s scared
Somewhere over Lincoln he was thinkin’,
as he was watching her sleeping there
Could he let go long enough to let someone else inside and care?
Somewhere over Akron he had fallen off, and she had watched him go
Had it been a year or maybe more since she held somebody close?
The fire's dyin’ slow
So it wasn’t perfect it was better than pride
Just enough to keep each other warm
And remember they’re alive
He woke up and she was puttin’ on her blue jeans
“I gotta meet someone at eight. I ain’t tryin’ to be mean.”
He said, “It’s cool,” and then he kissed her goodbye
She handed him a number and she said
“If you wanna spend some time... that would be alright... thanks for the flight”. |
