I was a runner in school. I used to fly so fast.
I’d find the quickest kid, and stride right past.

I made the team at State, but then the baby came.
So I went downtown, and signed my name.

I used to run so far, I used to fly so fast
There was a blinding light; there was a deafening blast
And now I’m rolling here, running with these hands
This boy came back as half a man.

I used to grab my girl. I’d dance her up and down
She’d laugh and say, “Fool put me down!”
Wrassling with my kids, tightly in my loving arms
Swinging round and round, ‘til we all saw stars

I used to hold my own. I used to carry my weight
And now she’s lifting my spoon, now she’s wiping my face
There was a deafening blast, old V.A. walls
My kids outside, playing ball.

This aint no Temple Mount. You aint no Abraham
Turned your back on Love, and raise your bloodied hands
And now they’re Warriors all, Heroes every one.
Their battle’s just begun.
